True Crime & Side Eyes: The Root of My Trust Issues

I spent the entire Women's History Month doing what any self-respecting crime enthusiast would do - watching "Snapped". For those of you who are unfamiliar, Snapped is a crime show that specifically centres women killers.

After managing to blaze through the most recent seasons, I'm currently so deep into the series, and there’s something I really wanna talk about.

I have questions.

One particular question that NEEDS an answer:

Why is it always friends and family members who are the first to go out of their way to snitch?!

And no, I’m not talking about folding under extreme pressures in an interrogation room, I’m talking about this meme:

man in blue shirt, talking on phone

Grab some popcorn, get under your weighted blanket and don’t forget to bring your trust issues because we’re going on a ride…

The Loyalty Crisis: A Scientific Study by Me

Maybe it’s because I’m a Libra (I blame everything on being a Libra), but loyalty is so damn important to me. Somewhere in another timeline, I’ve got “loyalty” largely tattooed in cursive across my forearm.

I’m big on choosing sides.

I’m big on instant cut-offs.

And I maintain a running “hitlist” of those who have crossed me.

Here's what's keeping me up at night: the consistent pattern of women being betrayed by their inner circle.

Like, Janet, was it absolutely necessary to mention that "suspicious" insurance policy?

Don't get me wrong - I'm not advocating for covering up crimes. But it's got me thinking about loyalty in general:

  • Are we, as women, too quick to trust?

  • Do we need a more thorough vetting process?

  • And why are we still talking to people who we KNOW can't keep a secret to save their life (or someone else's, apparently)?

Questions to Ask Yourself Before Spilling

  1. Have they ever kept your secrets in the past, or do they have a track record of talking about other peoples' business?

  2. Do they centre their conversations around gossip and other drama all the time?

  3. Have they shared the same story twice? This is a huge indicator that they’ve told several people the same piece of information and have simply lost track.

Now, before you say "I'm not even a killer!" - this post isn't just about true crime. It’s about protecting your peace, your dreams, and yes, sometimes your secrets. Not everyone who wants access to you deserves it.

Perhaps we need to be a tad more selective about who gets VIP access to our lives?
